Everyone has a unique fitness plan. Your body won’t react the same to weight lifting or dancing classes as your neighbor’s will. With copious gyms to choose from, how do you find the one that will work best for you?   • Tour the Facilities

This is the best help by far. Nothing give you an idea about where you might be working out quite like actually visiting the location. Touring a gym can give you a good idea of what they offer, what sort of atmosphere they have, and what sort of expectations you can set. Don’t be afraid to tour more than one place – you want to make an educated decision.

  • Meet the Staff

This could almost be labeled 1.2; when you’re touring a facility, say “hi” to the staff. These people will be responsible for setting the tone of your workout experience. You’ll deal with them often, especially any trainers or trained medical staff. Make sure they set a good impression.

  • Classes or Solo?

Take into account what you are looking for in your workout. Do you want to be left alone, or do you want to share the experience? Many gyms offer both, but if you want to take classes then make sure to investigate the roster – do they have a class you are interested in? If you want to go the solo route, check out the main floor. Do they have the sort of machines you want? This leads us to 4.

Knowing which of these you will prefer gives you another trait to watch when touring a gym. Not only do you want to be sure the gym offers your preference, you want to make sure that they have quality equipment. While it’s a little harder to have poor quality Free Weights, it’s still a good idea to check them over and make sure they are in good shape.

  • Café or no Café?

Some gyms prefer a “No Frills” approach to fitness – weights and machines, nothing more. Other places offer cafes with healthy-alternative snacks, pools, and spa areas for a more holistic approach to fitness. Weigh the pros and cons of each – if a No Frills approach is a deal breaker, than you’ve eliminated a choice. If you don’t mind either way, then push it to the back of your mind. If you can’t stand the idea of a café in your gym, a quick search for “No Frills” gyms will narrow your options.

  • What are Current Members Saying?

The second-best place to get a feel for a gym is from second-hand information. What are the people who go there saying? What do they like and dislike? Are you after similar goals, or treading different paths? While you shouldn’t base your entire decision on hearsay, it’s a good place to start.

  • Talk to Your Doctor

The most important piece of advice: find out what your doctor thinks you should do. Doctors understand bodies and their capabilities – they can recommend a good place for you to start. Maybe you need to focus on cardio, or perhaps your diet needs to be adjusted first. Your physician can give you a good starting point, and you or a personal trainer can take it from there.

Talking to your doctor can also help you understand your limits. Don’t plunge in blindly – sports injuries are harsh, and the rehab after takes more time away from your getting into shape.
