From its Portuguese roots, to its African ingredients, and now to its British patrons, Nando’s Peri-Peri chicken is certainly very unique and special. Nando’s Restaurant has been a cult hit in Britain and its Peri-Peri chicken has become the country’s favorite.
How did the Nando magic begin?
Nando’s story can be traced back centuries ago when Portuguese men sailed the seas to find the best spices in the world. In their quest, the sailors arrived in Africa where they discovered a very special spice: the African Bird’s Eye Chili or Peri-Peri.
Hundreds of years later, specifically in 1987, Fernando Duarte invited his friend Robbie Brozin to a humble Portuguese eatery in the heart of Rosettenville, South Africa. There, Robbie tasted his first Peri-peri chicken and fell in love with it at first bite! According to Robbie, it was the best chicken that he ever tasted. Later, the two friends bought the restaurant and named it Nando after Duarte. The restaurant prospered, had branches, and the rest is history.
Why do people love it?
Through the years, Nando’s has drawn a cult-like devotion from its customers. There are three top reasons why people keep on coming back to this unique restaurant.
- Amazing Flavors – Nando’s get their chickens locally to make sure that they are fresh. They never keep their chickens frozen. Their flame-grilled Peri-Peri chickens are marinated for 24 hours with special herbs and seasonings. This marinade does not contain any artificial preservatives, flavors, or colourants. Of course, its best ingredient is the Peri-Peri sauce. You can know the heat level of their sauces based on the Peri-ometer. If you like mild flavors just choose the Lemon and Herb flavor, but if you are ready for a challenge, you can try their Extra Hot sauce which is compared to the heat of a fire-breathing dragon.
- Affordable – Nando’s is a chain restaurant with pretty affordable prices that does not sacrifice the
flavors. If you want a break from KFC or McDonald’s, but do not want to spend much on expensive restaurants, this is the best place to go. The cost of their chicken ranges from £4.35 to £12.50, depending on the size. They also serve different kinds of salads which may cost £6.70 to £ 9.25. These prices are quite fair for the quality of their food.
- Popular Patrons – From musicians like Ed Sheeran, to athletes like David Beckham, to royalties
like Prince Harry, Nando’s Restaurant has a big share of famous customers. According to reports, the restaurant gives a High Five card, also known as the Black card, to selected famous personalities. Ed Sheeran has a photo holding one while eating at one of the restaurant’s branches. Though regular customers cannot have the card, the famous celebrities who dine and take their pictures in Nando’s truly encourage new and old patron’s to come to the restaurant.
- Good Atmosphere and Locations – Nando’s has 334 branches in strategic locations. The restaurant has a bright and cheerful atmosphere. It has pale stucco walls, rustic wooden tables, and colorful ethnic art.
