Stress relief doesn’t have to come in the form of a vacation – a visit to the salon can help, too
Life is full of stressors. Jobs, finances, family – you name it. All around, there is a cry of “I need a vacation!” And yet there are no vacations to be found. Those same factors that cause stress can also prevent stress relief…or, that’s what most people seem to think. Luckily, there are several ways to relieve stress that are much less expensive than leaving town. One of these ways is to treat yourself to a day of pampering at your local salon.
Salon visits, such as Toni and Guy or Rush Hair, don’t have to be for specific reasons. Yes, you go back to refresh your color; yes, you go periodically to keep your hair a proper length. But you can also just go for a wash and a trim. There is something inherently relaxing about having someone else wash your hair. Perhaps it is because they get the water just right, or know just how to move their fingers.
If your salon offers nail services, why not swing for a mani-pedi? Maybe get your eyebrows waxed, or investigate a skin treatment. Let yourself relax, chat with the staff or read a good book. While the visit itself might not even last an hour, you’ll feel better afterwards.
If you find relaxing anywhere difficult, here are a few tips to help out.
- Take a deep breath, then let it out.
Breathing exercises are a good way to physically relax your muscles, but they also help to reset your mind. Take a moment to breathe and allow yourself to become distracted from the outside world.
No interruptions, no annoying ringtones going off just as you start to enjoy yourself. Ignore everything for a couple of hours, yes even the internet. No electronics whatsoever. The bright lights and constant surfing can add to your stress levels, and scientists are beginning to study how blue light can have adverse effects on your rest cycle.
- Set aside the entire day. No deadlines, no appointments.
You don’t need to rush. Take the day to enjoy yourself. Is your hairstylist running late? No problem, you don’t have anywhere to be. Just have a seat. Is your hair taking a while to dry? It’s fine, gives you more time to read.
- Have a couple of good books with you.
If you have trouble losing yourself in a calm day, try losing yourself in a good book instead. Reading is good for your mind, but it is also very relaxing. There are no bright screens to strain your eyes, for one. Waiting for your appointment, for color to sit, or for your hair to dry are good instances to pull out a book and get some reading done.
- Show off your style
With clean hair and a trimmed up ‘do, perhaps some softer skin or cute nails, you’re ready to tackle the world. Why not pop on a nice outfit and take a stroll? Sometimes it’s nice to get dressed up for no reason at all. You could always come up with a reason, too. Maybe you’d like to take your friends to dinner or go see a movie?
Enjoy the day you’ve set aside for yourself. Enjoy how you look. Enjoy your mini-vacation.
