Give Me More Friday’s

Many may dismiss TGIFriday’s as a run-of-the-mill casual dining restaurant/bar, but it actually has a very colorful beginning that completely changed the bar scene in the US. Known for their red-striped canopies, brass railings, Tiffany lamps, antique décor, and laid back pub-like atmosphere, this American restaurant chain has sixty branches in the UK and is planning to open more in the future.

A Little Background

One of the most interesting things about TGIFriday’s is its history. Also referred to as Friday’s, this chain started out in 1965. Alan Stillman purchased The Good Tavern on the East Side of Manhattan, New York and transformed it into the first TGIFriday’s after realizing that he wanted to meet women. As the neighborhood is filled with other young, single people without a venue to mingle in, he created his first restaurant despite having zero experience in the field.

The first TGIFriday’s location, just like the Friday’s today, served American cuisine, bar food, and alcoholic beverages. The atmosphere is a nice balance between a bar and a restaurant, so women were attracted to the venue. By creating this establishment, Stilman is also credited in the book The Feminine Mystique to have created a place for young single women to go to on Friday nights, when they only used to hang out in people’s apartments and held private cocktail parties with friends. In short, he inadvertently created one of the first singles bars in the US.

What Sets Them Apart

While TGIFriday’s compete with just about any other casual dining establishment that also serve alcoholic beverages, they still offer a few things differently. Some of these are the following:

  1. While it isn’t exclusively a singles bar anymore, it still maintains a friendly atmosphere that welcomes everyone. It’s still a good place to hang out with friends and chat over a few beers and chow.
  2. The food is pretty good, with ample servings. Some casual dining restaurants tend to skimp on bar food, but with Friday’s, you can count on them to serve you a decent size of whatever you want to eat while you down your beer or cocktail.

Why You Should Dine Here

If you want a nice place to catch up with friends over some drinks, TGIFriday’s is always a nice option. It can also be a good place to eat out since they also offer a pretty good range of menu items.
