Twycross Zoo is a medium to large zoo near Norton Juxta Twycross in Leicestershire. In 2006 the zoo renamed itself to “The World Primate Center,” understandably because it has the Western World’s largest collection of monkeys and apes. Over 500,000 people a year visit this Primate Center to see over 150 species of primates.
Twycross Zoo is the only place in the UK that you can see the following great apes: the bonobo, chimpanzee, orangutan and gorilla. It houses one of the largest collections of gibbons in Europe. Their breeding program helps to preserve many endangered and threatened species.
Many visitors to the zoo express appreciation for the variety of animals they saw. Depending on the time of year and time of day the sightings varied of animals that were free to roam. Each section houses the animals in different ways, and there are many species of animals besides primates to be seen.
The zoo is divided into 8 sections, and has many more animals than primates. Wallabies and and muntjac deer can be found in the Himalaya section. Butterflies can be found in the Explorer Zone. The Life in the Trees section holds many primates including old- and new-world monkeys, as well as orangutans, kangaroos, emus, otters and parrots.
The Kingdom of Apes contain 3 of the great apes–bonobo, gorilla and chimpanzee. There is also an exhibit called “Walking with the Lemurs,” as well as containing one of the largest species of tortoises in the world. Other animals are dholes, Darwin’s rhea, tufted deer and crowned lemur.
Aptly name “Conservation Way” holds a critically endangered species Amur leopards, the rarest cat in the world. Slamang gibbons are also housed there. Other animals that can be found in this section are zebras, meercats, and nyala. Wet and Wild provides a more natural environment for birds, home to penguins, flamingos and cranes. This section also has non-bird inhabitants with prairie dogs, bush dogs, martens and others inhabiting the space.
Elephant Creek’s main occupants are elephants in a space where they can be viewed from all sides. Small monkeys, owls, monkeys, and other animals live there as well.
