A Little Background

Founded in 1934 in Bloomington, Indiana, Wimpy is originally an American fast food concept that opened its first store in the UK in 1954. Stores were known as “Wimpy bars”, offering hamburger-based meals. The brand’s establishment in British soil signalled the growth of American culture in the country, although they did add a few menu items that are more familiar to the British consumers.

Wimpy’s growth was rapid, so by 1970, they already have more than 1000 restaurants around the globe. However, by the 1980s, their decline started with the entrance of McDonald’s and Burger King. The company changed hands a few times and tried to bring back its old glamour, but most efforts fell short. Today, Wimpy is still around but with fewer locations.

What Sets Them Apart

Wimpy may be a fast food chain, but it doesn’t mean that it has a unique character. If you want to know what makes it different from competitors like McDonald’s and Burger King, here are a few things that you’d like to know:

  1. They’re quite nostalgic. If you grew up eating a Bender in a Bun, then a visit to Wimpy can easily bring back some memories of your childhood. Other fast food chains are so common that they won’t have such a factor for you, so the next time you feel like taking a trip down the memory lane, include a stop at a Wimpy on your itinerary.
  1. Bender in a Bun. Sure, their burgers are good, but nothing compares to a Bender in a Bun. These menu items are their signatures, so even if it’s not your cup of tea, you’ll be hard pressed to find something like it elsewhere.
  1. Fastfood setting but with table service. This makes Wimpy a great place for moms who are out and about with their kids as they can now enjoy fast food without the hassle of lining up on the counter.

Why You Should Dine Here

If their unique offerings haven’t convinced you of giving this place a shot, there are still a lot of reasons why you should eat at a Wimpy. For one, you should eat here for old time’s sake. Especially if you have fond childhood memories of dining here with friends and family, a visit will surely tug at your heartstrings. The food is still great, too, so that should also convince you to dine at this very British fast food.
